Bring A Guest Wed. for A Great Program: Garrett Lewis

Garrett Lewis, KFSM-TV's Chief Meteorologist, can be seen weeknights at 5, 6, & 10pm. Garrett's passion for forecasting and weather comes from growing up in the small Arkansas town of Alma. Garrett has witnessed some of the most amazing weather events unfold in our area including the 1996 Van Buren tornado, the crippling ice storm of 2000, the flooding of 2004, and the 2006 Benton County tornado.

"Growing up, I was frustrated with the overnight severe weather coverage in this area. I would channel surf throughout the night trying to find detailed weather coverage. I told myself, if I ever made it to television, I would always be there in the middle of the night or early morning to let my viewers know what on earth was going on. 5NEWS allows me to use crawls, commercial weather updates, or even breaking in over programming when lives are in danger."

Some of his most memorable weather moments stem from storm chasing in the Great Plains, including the May 3, 1999 outbreak which spawned several tornadoes in Central Oklahoma. Garrett also reported live in 100mph winds as Hurricane Lili made landfall near New Iberia, Louisiana. In fact, Garrett's passion for weather led to an unusual hobby: collecting hailstones and freezing them in the refrigerator.

Garrett joined 5NEWS in December 1999 and went on-air in July of 2001. Garrett now works as the Chief Meteorologist and can be seen at 5, 6, and 10pm on 5NEWS. His weather credentials come from Mississippi State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geosciences with an emphasis in Meteorology. Garrett also holds a certification in broadcast meteorology from MSU.

In addition, Garrett has been awarded the 'National Weather Association's Seal of Approval' and the American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval. Garrett has been recognized by the Arkansas Associated Press for his weathercasts.

When he's not tracking storms with Live MAX5 Doppler Radar you can usually find Garrett outside canoeing, kayaking or climbing. He's also very much into triathlon training (bicycling, running, & swimming). Garrett also passes the time studying scripture, playing acoustic guitar or playing with his three Jack Russell Terriers, Avery, Benny and Peaches.

You may hear Garrett on the HAM radio during severe weather. His call sign is KD5OMI. During severe weather the MAX5 Storm Team coordinates with local Skywarn Storm Spotters as well as the National Weather Service in both Little Rock and Tulsa to share emergency information.

Garrett and his wife, Ashley, have been married for 6 years & they attend Heritage Church.

New Feature: Q & A

Most websites offer Q & A or FAQ pages. Not to be out done Alma Rotary is starting a Questions and Answers segment. However, it will only work if each and every member will leave a sarcastic comment after every Q & A.

Here's a sample of how it will work:

Q Do I have to wear my pin at every meeting?

A You should wear a Rotary pin everyday as a way to share Rotary with the general
public. A permanent tattoo of the Rotary Wheel on your forehead will keep you
from having to hunt down your pin daily.

Now surely you have a better answer. Just click on the word "comments" at the bottom of this post. You can put the "dot" in anonymous or sign you name then click on the button that says "publish" but please leave a comment.

Your answer might be: "I'd rather give a dollar than try and find my pin each week"

To make this successful, the more that participate the better it will be, so leave a comment.

In 1955 Rotary Club produced a series of radio dramas. I know this was long before most of you were born, but believe me there was a time when radio had more than just music.

Rotary Club on it's 50 year anaversery produced a series of radio shows. This program has a lesson to be learned about youth. Right now all is moving high speed in our club. Let's bring the youth along for the ride.

900 Visitors to this Blog

When will we hit 1000?

I predict by next Wednesday meeting. The easiest way to give someone the address this site, is to just tell them to "google" Alma Rotary. We are usually the first or second item in the search. Today, the Garrett Lewis Video that is posted on You Tube popped in as the first entry. That wouldn't take to you to site.
Or you could do the old fashion way and give them the complete address which is:

www.almarotary.blogspot.com

If you do this, be sure and point out that there are two "dots" in the address.

I will try to post something new daily. So, make it your home page or check back often.

As you may have heard from the meeting today, A.C. Moncrief is in the hospital with kidney stones. Please keep him in your prayers.

This is a great project because they do all the work. Our job is to promote their sale truck that will start parked in front of Citizens Bank this Saturday morning. If more traffic is needed, it will be moved to Bankcorp South afternoon Saturday. We will get a percentage of all sales. It the volume increases so will our percentage. We need your help to publicize this and to be a customer.

Never Stop Recruiting

We have 65 charter members of the Alma Rotary and a little over 1/3 come to meetings. This seems to be about average through out Rotary. Using this formula, if we wanted an attendance of 50 we would have to have 150 members. Just because we are having great meetings, and we beat Greenwood, is no reason to stop inviting good people to join Alma Rotary. Consider this article from the District Newsletter:

Why Don’t People Join Rotary?
We Don’t Ask Them!

From Frank Talk I, p. xxxii, Introduction • By Frank Devlin RI President 2000-2001“…the biggest reason why good people
don’t join Rotary is that we Rotarians
don’t ask them to. Oh sure, we ask our
sons and daughters, our close business
associates and friends to join sometimes,
but we so often don’t even think of our
duty as (Rotary) advocates with most
people we run across in our daily lives.
That doctor I met who had brought his
club president into the world has, in 49
years of Rotary membership introduced
only one new member into his club. He
told me he had delivered about 1000 babies
in his career. I think at least 10 percent of
them would have been excited, elated and
deeply honored just as his club president
was, if the doctor who brought them
into this world had invited them many
years later to join Rotary. What a missed
opportunity.”

Next week will be a continuation of the planning activities. The excitement and eagerness to get things going was in the air. Next week the Wednesday meeting will BE ANNOUNCED SOON. CHECK BACK OFTEN AND LOCATION WILL BE POSTED AS SOON AS IT IS CONFIRMED, $6.00 for lunch, starting at 11:55.

Check back tomorrow for more details.

Excerpt from Paul Wise Presentation last week

Meeting Starts at 11:55 AM Wed.

In order to keep the meeting to an hour, we need to start on time at 11:55 A.M. You are aware that it takes some time to find your badge and place your food order. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sargent at arms doesn't start fining late comers. Come early, bring a guest, and let's have a great meeting.
